Have you heard of the Logan Museum? Luckily for us Beloiters, the first floor exhibit  is having its grand reopening on November 16th, 2023. Located around our beloved cube, It will feature three new student curated exhibits, highlighting the history of anthropology and its impact on Beloit. They are designed to introduce visitors to our anthropologists, and students to opportunities the anthropology department and museum can provide.

Founded in 1894 by Beloit trustee Frank Granger Logan, the Logan museum has been a vast source of knowledge for blooming anthropologists, other students, and local Beloiters. The Logan museum was recognized by the American Alliance of Museums twice, Once in 1972 and again in 2007. Now the Logan is home to over 300,000 ethnographic and archaeological objects, from more than 600 cultural groups. While the Logan does house a vast array of archaeological artifacts, the exhibitions Focus on Western Cultures in the western hemisphere, particularly the indigenous culture of this region.

While we wait to see the new exhibit, there is still lots of information to explore in the Logan Museum. On the second floor, there is the Huipil Punk: Indigenous Fashion and Neocolonial Resistance exhibit. Available in English and Spanish, this exhibit was curated by Grace Law and focuses on Mexican indigenous clothing’s impact on the self. Check it out 11:00AM to 4:00PM, February 7th To December 6th 2023.

Another spectacular exhibit you can visit currently is The Interwoven Stories of Diné Textiles. Beloit college being built on native land has led the Logan Museum to focus on indigenous stories and voices. This exhibit features the practice and production of Diné (Navajo) weaving. Cultivated by students to make a more interactive experience, it continues to explore Dine’s culture and the impact western colonialism had on their culture. Check this Exhibit out until December 16th, 11:00AM to 5:00PM 2023.

The grand reopening will also feature brand new lighting to highlight the new exhibit, as well as some cool graphic design. And if all that isn’t enough to get your attention, there will be refreshments and snacks served at the opening. So walk on over to the Logan Museum, located right by the poetry garden, and enjoy an experience curated by fellow students.

We are excited to announce Logan Museum’s grand reopening and hope to see you there on Tuesday, November 16th, 2023. Get ready to learn about the anthropology department members and all it has to offer to Beloit College students.
