On Friday, Beloit College’s C-Haus hosted its Halloween Party. Ghostly streamers filtered down from the ceilings, and tables were strewn with buckets of candy for attendees. The stage was set for the first band of the night, Golf Dolls, an Indie Rock/Jangle Pop outfit with a hardcore edge from Madison, Wisconsin. The three-piece band powered through an energetic set in front of a gaggle of attendees feeling the music. “It’s great that live music is back at C-Haus, it’s been a long time coming,” says Micah Wilk‘25, C-Haus’ musical director who booked both bands and is a musician himself. Golf Dolls had a unique sensibility, with all three members clad in traditional, almost stereotypical “nerd” attire, with pocket protectors, glasses, and shirts buttoned up to the collar.
With distorted jams like a song called “Scammin’ Grandma” a good time was had by all. Next up was a local band from Rockford, Illinois called Superbrick, and they were difficult to categorize, operating in a multitude of genres. The band’s website describes them as: “Emerging from the cracks of the Memphis alternative and indie scene, Super Brick combines the nuances of the city’s prominent history of blues/soul music with their own modern touches creating a palette of unique tonalities that are undoubtedly their own.”
It goes on to convey the feeling of being at a Superbrick show and seeing all of these different influences converge: “Whether it’s jazz, blues, rock, alt or indie, Super Brick does it all with grace and skill bringing you an unmatched experience of heartfelt lows and incendiary highs that’ll leave you wishing their show would never end.” The band chugged through a memorable set, which included countless originals mixed with interesting cover song choices, such as “Fruit Salad” by children’s TV stars The Wiggles, and “Blitzkrieg Bop” by The Ramones. Overall, it was a night in classic C-Haus form, with students filtering in and out and two sterling rock outfits strumming out great tunes.
