The Art Club Gives Back: A Free Art Supply Giveaway

I was lucky enough to attend the Art Club’s supply giveaway this Friday, Sept. 19. It took place at the wall, where there was music, good conversation, and, of course, art supplies! The gently-loved supplies were donated or left by students, past and present, here at Beloit. They had a table full of all kinds of materials, ranging from paints and pastels to washi tape and ribbons: something for everyone! I had some good conversations with the president and founder of the art club, Kaila Nork’26, and Sam Mcullough’29, a student there to get some supplies. I even snagged a few goodies myself!

Talking with Nork, I was able to ask them about the intention of the giveaway. They said, “We’ve gotten so many different donations and some stuff is more useful than other stuff, so we just decided to give back to the community… I think it’s important that clubs give back to their communities, because people do pay a club fee every year, and it’s important to see where that money goes… So we thought, let’s actually give back.” This was a project for the community, and to make use of the extra materials in the storage. A great event for skilled and beginner artists looking for new tools.

I was also able to interview Sam McCullough’29 who attended this event. I asked them how they heard about this event. They replied, “I heard about it from my friend. We went to the involvement fair and she actually stopped over at the club’s table! She told me about it and I was like, free art supplies? Sign me up!” The involvement fair is an amazing place to find events and clubs you’re interested in! In McCullough’s case, they got some nice new art materials: “I got the primary colors in acrylic, I’m set!”

All in all it was a fun and successful event! There was good weather, good people, and great art supplies. What more could you ask for? My final question for Nork was if this giveaway would become an annual event. “ I would love for it to be an annual thing!” was Nork’s response. So maybe keep this event in mind for next year and don’t forget to look out for the Art Club at the next involvement fair to see if/when the next one will be!
