Wisconsin Department of Health Services Recommends COVID-19 Vaccine for Everyone 6 Months and Older

Governor Tony Evers’ executive order directed the Wisconsin DHS to  review the scientific evidence regarding the COVID-19 vaccine. In response to this review, DHS has issued a statewide medical order that allows most Wisconsin residents who want the vaccine to get it at pharmacies across the state without a prescription. They continue to urge Wisconsinites who are 6 months or older to get the vaccine during this fall season, when illnesses start to go around at a more rapid rate.

DHS Secretary Kristen Johnson states, “Everyone in Wisconsin should be able to make the choice to protect themselves and their families against COVID-19.”

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the updated vaccine for only those above 65 years of age, and those under 65 who have high-risk conditions. This contradicts previous recommendations from the CDC, and other recommendations from leading medical organizations. Those recommendations reflect what the DHS is stating. Everyone 6 months and older should receive the updated vaccine.

“Evidence shows that COVID-19 vaccines lower the chance of severe illness across age groups, and this is especially important for those at higher risk,” said Dr. Ryan Westergaard, Chief Medical Officer and State Epidemiologist in the Division of Public Health. “Because the benefits outweigh the risks for almost all people, DHS supports making the updated vaccine available so that every Wisconsinite can decide whether vaccination is the right choice for them.”

COVID-19 vaccine availability is expected to increase throughout Wisconsin as healthcare providers receive more of the vaccine from manufacturers. Those who want to heed the recommendations and get this year’s updated vaccine should contact their doctor’s office, pharmacy, or community health center. Wisconsin residents can also visit the DHS COVID-19: Vaccine webpage for more information on vaccine availability.
