Global Justice Past and Present Film Festival

Albertine Cinémathèque has once again partnered with Beloit college for a screening of six films over the course of three weeks. This year’s theme is Global Justice: Past and Present, with showtimes on Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Weissberg. Led by Professor Joseph Derosier, the event began on Feb. 4, 2026, with a screening of Mati Diop’s 2024 Golden Bear winning documentary Dahomey and rounded the week out with Rithy Panh’s A Meeting with Pol Pot.

The yearly festival comes from the French department receiving a grant from Albertine Cinémathèque, directly covering the cost of screening fees. Albertine is an American non-profit organization, partnered with the French government, which seeks to promote intercultural literacy and artistic interchange.

The films this year, as indicated by the title theme, meditate on histories of injustice and oppression, drawing historical parallels from past oppression to contemporary suffering. For example, Dahomey details the repatriation of several treasures in France, originating from Benin. Stressing deep questions about colonization, revolution, and the importance of art to spirit, Mati Diop is a French Director, best known for her award winning 2019 film Atlantiques.

Meeting With Pol Pot is a narrative film recounting the story of three journalists invited to Democratic Kampuchea, now Cambodia, by the repressive Khmer Rouge so that they may interview regime leader Pol Pot. This film too covers histories of colonialism and the brutality it leaves in its wake.

More movies will be screening Feb. 11, 13, 18, and 20, in the Weissberg Theater at 7:30 p.m.
