I am gonna preface this article by saying that I have not seen “Bottoms” yet, directed by Emma Seligman, and will not until it comes out on some sort of streaming service(R.I.P soap2day).
The hype I have seen around this movie coming out has honestly been huge. This is in part because I run in those kinds of circles but also people were honestly just really excited to have a fun slightly bloody movie about funny incel lesbians. The movie was playing in major cities only for opening weekend and people are not gonna drive over an hour to go see a movie that will eventually be streaming.
It really f*cking sucks that people cannot go support the film and give it opening weekend box office success. It has expanded to more theaters(you should go watch it at Rockford AMC).
However, this only came after the opening weekend which made 5.3 million. This obviously is not a small amount but it could have made way more if it had opened in more cities.
I usually couldn’t care less about what movies are coming out but I will do anything for films about lesbians. There are so few bits of popular media that actually center lesbians.
Obviously things are changing and there are more shows and movies that feature queer people but so many do not focus on lesbians. Lesbians are not palatable for most audiences.
The concept of a box office film featuring lesbians that are a little gross and have sexual wants would have been f*cking insane 10 years ago. Also, the impact of actually saying the word lesbian on screen is great for lesbians to become more comfortable using the term.
A while ago there was a whole thing about how Jojo Siwa hated the term lesbian and refused to call herself that. That sentiment is reflected a lot in the community and it sucks so much for people to feel ashamed of who they are just because people really hate lesbians.
I also think this movie is a great reminder that lesbians are not some group of saviors for women who are done with dating men. Lesbians also sexualize women and are messy and definitely are not some perfect solution to your misogynistic ex. Basically this movie is incredible and fun and brilliant and bloody and it is so amazing to have representation.
