Open since 1974, Beloit’s Coughy Haus (C-Haus) has long been a center for community and celebration. On the corner of College and Clary Street sits a small venue with lots of history. Hosting a variety of events, C-Haus has something for everyone. C-Haus has been a great place to let loose after a hard week of classes- since the ‘70s! First initiated by Coleman Hoyt(‘74) and Steven Welch(‘73), the venue has now hosted a variety of prominent acts, including artists such as Frank Zappa, Modest Mouse, The Violent Femmes, and many more! A quick Google search will bring you to setlists, photographs, and live albums from the past 40 to 50 years.

This past Friday, September 8th, the C-Haus reopened, welcoming in new and returning students. The theme was “Barbie Party”, and students came out with spirit! During the event, some time was reserved for a costume contest. A wide variety of Barbies and Kens gave it their all; ultimately, ‘Aerobics Barbie’ won the hearts of the partygoers. The event was widely successful and provides a glance at what the rest of this semester will look like for C-Haus. Places such as these are great ways to keep the community connected and united. One of the unique attributes of Beloit’s campus is its small size, which provides the opportunity for a greater sense of interconnectivity. Community centers like the Coughy Haus make up our campus. Keeping everyone fired up was fan-favorite DJ, “J”, who will continue to keep us dancing throughout the year.

So, now that the C-Haus is officially back in business, what do you need to know? The C-Haus team is working hard to continue the venue’s purpose as a community event space and strives to make sure that this is a place for all groups. This is a site of connection! At C-Haus, students can attend live performances, dance their hearts out, or debut their new band. All students, alumni, faculty, and staff are welcome to come and have a good time. If a student wants to bring a friend or family member, they can get a guest pass from security. There are several amenities that C-Haus offers to its patrons, including both a foosball and pool table, as well as various seating options. For students or faculty over the age of 21, the bar offers a small selection of beer, seltzer, and cider. Younger students have the option to purchase soda or snacks, and water is always available for free for anyone! There is also a single-stall bathroom in the back of the venue and an open patio out in the front. Keep in mind that any alcohol must be purchased from the C-Haus and must stay in the venue.

Anyone interested in booking performances can contact chaus@beloit.edu, whether it’s a student act or an off-campus band. This is the same address for any clubs and organizations interested in hosting events in the C-Haus. Additionally, the space is also open for rehearsal during certain hours. During the regular season, the Coughy Haus is open from 8:00 PM to midnight on Thursdays, and 9:00 PM to 2:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. These timeslots may include bands, DJ sets, open mic nights, and trivia! This season, there will be two events every month hosted specifically by the C-Haus. While the schedule isn’t yet set, check out the Upcoming Events section of the C-Haus webpage for updates, as well as the Campus Events Calendar.

As we move through the semester, keep C-Haus in your mind. Stop in every once in a while. You don’t have to be at every event, but know that these are great opportunities to connect with fellow students- and maybe even a faculty member! For updates, be sure to follow their Instagram profile which you can find at @chaus_beloit. Welcome back, Beloiters!
