On Saturday, September 16, Beloit FemCo (Feminist Collective) hosted an event to mark their official re-opening. Boasting food, drinks, music, & games, the event was certainly a hit—simply ask anyone with a new handmade bracelet where they got it from. If the inside festivities aren’t enough proof that FemCo knows how to have a good time, stroll over & look at the table on their porch; anyone was allowed to write on it, which led to some interesting lines (shoutout to “trans rights,” “I tend to rip my nails off with my fingers as a fun little hobby,” and the multiple drawings of breasts).
At the party, the FemCo executives were going around and talking to the attendees—not only to make sure everyone was having a fun time, but also just to socialize and talk with their attendees. While talking with them, they shed some light both in FemCo’s past, and its plans for the future.
This year’s FemCo is hoping to bring more to campus this year.. There are currently plans to host educational events about safe sex, consent, & feminist history. And with SHARCC (Sexual Health and Reproductive Choice Coalition)no longer active, FemCo hopes to take over the responsibility of stocking feminine hygiene products in the campus restrooms. Additionally, FemCo is currently working on a Google Drive which will contain documents on feminist & Women’s Rights history, so that anyone interested has an easy place to start looking into the topic.
Beloit FemCo has a lot in-store for those interested. It’s important to note that FemCo, while being a feminist organization, isn’t just for women. Anyone female-identified, as well as those who fall outside the gender binary, are welcome, even men are allowed to attend FemCo events & contribute to helping Beloit College become a more gender-inclusive campus. While talking to Paige Lancaster’26, one of the FemCo executives, she pointed out that “traditionally, feminism and feminist groups started as white-only feminism… [she’s] dedicated to making sure FemCo isn’t that.” She added that “all identities are welcome.”
