The Beloit Public Library and Stateline Community Foundation presented the first segment of the “Know Your Local Government Series” on November 15. Eric Miller,  Finance & Administrative Services Director for the City of Beloit, discussed the city’s budget, where the money comes from, and most importantly, how it will be used.

The educational series, which will occur six times through March, aims to educate the public about property tax use. Inspired by Nick Dimassis and Beloit College professors Laura Grube and Jeff Adams, the series provides Beloit’s citizens with accessible information regarding governmental tax use.

“Motivation for the event comes from the concern that information about local government is not widely available nor widely understood,” Grube said. “As we are looking in the direction of another presidential election, we might benefit from looking at our own backyard too.”

Miller has prepared ten budgets throughout his work as the city’s finance director. Throughout his presentation, Miller explained the budget process, revenue sources, and what the money will actually go towards.

While the series primarily aims to educate Beloit’s taxpayers, a deeper understanding of the city budget is crucial for all community members. Miller’s explanation of the budget not only illustrated the city’s priorities, but also demonstrated the challenges faced by local governments from state and federal levels. This knowledge, especially in the eve of upcoming elections, is crucial for voters and any members of the community who hold opinions.

The series will continue on December 20 with Jim Nemeth from Blackhawk Technical College.
