“give us our roses while we’re still here”

does not mean

give your sons the bouquet you give your daughters

give me instead

the corsage my high school girlfriend bought me for my senior prom

give me the jacqueminots of my fraternity

with no thorns to draw innocent blood

give me the cheap fabric and plastic i bought at the craft store

that my ex left at my door when we finally broke up

give me the balloon flowers and snapdragons in my childhood backyard

give me christmas poinsettias and easter lilies

give me lady’s slippers to carry me through the snow

give me the rotten perfume of spring cherry blossoms

but do not

give me the bouquet you give your daughters
