On Thursday, April 16, CELEB in Downtown Beloit hosted the launch party of Beloit Fiction Journal’s 37th volume. The audience was overwhelming, from the creator of “King Cat Comics” and Beloit College instructor John Porcellino to student writers. Alumni Harry Priester’23 played a sweet tune on his old guitar before the events kicked off, to the delight of all.
Chris Fink, the illustrious Professor of English and editor-in-chief of BFJ, took center stage to unveil the journal, a masterful compilation born from the tireless efforts of Beloit students. Each fall, the class reads hundreds of stories and chooses the crème de la crème. They are: Managing Editor Grayson Thobe’24; Production Editors Ella Diers’24, Grace Gilmore’24, and Rut Jimenez’25; and Board of Editors Nancy Clark-Mather, Emilio Mendoza’24, India David’25, Jasmin Montes’25, Katherine Eckman’25, Aiden Phipps’26, Maddy Mathey’25, Alexis Ross’24, and Azalea Swan’25.
The excitement escalated as four editors led the audience on a riveting NYT Connections-inspired quiz, teasing out snippets from four standout short stories. Winners of each round snagged coveted teacups, in reference to this year’s cover art designed by the talented Alaina Neal.
Adding to the soirée’s charm was an array of delectable delights, including a stunning charcuterie board, New Glarus beer, and fine wine. And the pièce de résistance? This edition of BFJ can be yours for just $10, available for purchase through the Beloit College website.
