The Spring 2025 edition of Beloit Fiction Journal was officially released on April 8. Per tradition, a launch party was held in CELEB, with students and faculty in attendance.
The journal is put together annually by students in the JOUR/ENGL 228 class. Members of the class read through hundreds of submissions, picking the best to be featured in the journal. The experience also counts for an internship credit, giving students valuable experience in an editorial position. After the semester ends, a few students continue working with the selected stories’ authors to refine the work. India David‘25 and Azalea Swan‘25 were this year’s managing editors, with Brigid Parker’25, Lucy Traynor’25 and Fiona Hughes’26 as the production editors.
The main event of the afternoon was a series of readings from the journal. All five of the editors took turns reading excerpts from their favorite short story, with pieces ranging from “Pastor Disaster and the Spring Loaded Drop Kicked Dog,” “Chow Down Saturdays at the Pig Slop” and “The Mentor.” The readings were interspersed with trivia questions, giving the opportunity for attendees to win a free copy of the journal. David describes the selection of stories as “bizarre little slices of life,” adding that she enjoyed seeing the variety of stories and collaborating with the other editors.
A link to purchase the journal for $10 can be found on the Beloit Fiction Journal page on the college’s website. Older editions are also available for $7.
