Diving Headfirst into the Muff

DK’s is back. The once defunct corner in Pearsons is back for the campus to enjoy. But what does that mean for me, as a boy too young to know what DK’s was like back in the day? Muffin.

I’m going to review the muffins from DK’s. Are they good? Are they not good? There are lot’s of questions to answer, so this article can act as a guide for you and anyone else interested in putting a little piece of DK’s in your mouth.

There are certain qualities that define a great muffin. A nice, rounded mound that tops the muffin; a coarse yet uniform texture and grain; a feeling in both your hands and mouth that is moist but not wet; and finally, the flavor. After defining the traits that make a good muffin, I have created what I believe to be the quintessential standard for judging a muffin. A scale which looks at the mound, uniformity, feel, and flavor of the baked good. The MUFF.

As someone tasked with judging the muffins from DK’s, I had to really dig deep into the MUFF and assure that I was truly judging the muffins for what they are.

The Double Chocolate Chip Muffin. The mound: A rounded top that, apart from some cracking, pleases the MUFF. Uniformity: Unfortunately, the uniformity of the muffin was left lacking. While certain bites were what you’d expect, others were unbelievably wet. Not in a sexy way, but rather, a mushy one. Feel: Expanding on what was said about the uniformity, this muffin was unfortunately too wet. Flavor: Yummy chocolate.

The Blueberry Muffin. The mound: Perfect. Exactly what you want from a muffin top. It was as if I could bounce a quarter off it. Uniformity: The muffin has an amazing, uniform grain that would only be interrupted by the occasional blueberry. Feel: Soft and tender. Unfortunately, that tenderness is overwhelmed by how oily my hands were after picking it up. With each word my keyboard found itself with a new stain. Flavor: Yummy blueberry.

The Cranberry Orange Muffin. The mound: Almost perfectly rounded, apart from some cranberries poking out. Uniformity: Perfectly adequate. I don’t know. It’s actually kind of hard to think of different ways to say “the grain is uniform” while still trying to sound like I know what I’m talking about. I’m sorry. Feel: Mr. Cranberry Orange was baked longer than the others, resulting in the edges being darker and crispy. While my muffin tasting partner stated that the muffin was “overbaked,” I actually liked the crispy crust. I don’t know, I’m a freak like that. Flavor: Sour cranberry. Yummy orange.

The Lemon Poppyseed Muffin. The mound: Major cracks. Did you know I had to carry three of the muffins around with me to class? It was embarrassing. Uniformity: It’s dense, but it’s still uniform. Lots of poppyseeds. Feel: Oily oily oily. Flavor: Yummy lemon.

The muffins from DK’s are perfectly adequate, and I am thankful for what has been so graciously provided to us. All hail DK’s. All hail the MUFF.
