The Crepey Halloween Party, done by the Beloit College French Club, took place on October 30 in the French housing in Haven Hall. A small gathering of people collect in the shared lounge of the home, where a cozy kitchen wafts warm batter that fills the air, and people share familiarities amongst each other. When entering, I was greeted by members Clara Martin’27, Vivian Sooty’27, and Julia Weber ‘27 who were working hard–cranking out at least 70+ crepes since the event had gone on.
I was approached by Julia Weber’27, the French Club president, who ambitiously hands me a neon green crepe that coincidentally was rat shaped, very on theme. They had many options of toppings, from lemon curd to nutella, which was spread on the flat treat. As I sat with my crepe, I kept busy conversing with students and talking about similar interests in not liking dance parties, and what was taking place, was a great change in pace.
My experience at this get together were inviting, I was able to talk to old friends and get to know the new. If I was not getting to know people, I kept myself occupied with another delicious crepe, meeting a speckled kitty named Beanie, who was a cat of Julia’s or scrawl unknown French poems with the magnetic poetry words scattered on the fridge next to me. Tying in familiar words to create a sentence that roughly means “Or the serpent woman”.
I had a great time catching up that I stayed until the event came to a close and things were getting packed up. When mentioned that the Roundtable was interested in covering their event, the club collective was enthusiastic and they were thrilled to answer or add to questions regarding their event and club. Laura mentions, their ongoing Musique Mercredi event, which happens every wednesday from 6-8pm in Haven where they provide a study space, a place to talk and connect students with international music. Sounds like a great place to beat procrastination and listen to new tunes, you hould be there or be square!
Vivian Sooty, the french club secretary wants to thank those who came, “We are just overwhelmed by your kindness.” This event was fun and heartfelt and had a great wrap up, I left feeling full—both in my stomach and heart—and can’t wait for more events like this!
