Although Halloween has passed, its spirit has not! Whether you want to save them for next year or continue the Halloween spirit to November, here is a countdown to the top 10 Halloween movies to watch with your friends!
10. Ready or Not
This is a very thrilling movie with a little bit of comedy that brings to life a very cool concept: getting murdered by your in-laws! Grace, our main character, goes on a honeymoon at her husband’s estate with his family. She soon finds out they may not be as normal as they seem and she finds herself hiding from them all night, desperately trying to escape. And you thought your boyfriend’s mom was bad?
9. Terrifier 2
Don’t get it twisted, this is not a fun movie that you can pleasantly sit through with your friends. Terrifier 2 follows Art the Clown after he is resurrected by a sinister entity. This movie is well-known for its gore and disturbing scenes however, I think if you watch it with the right friends, you can turn the right scenes into good laughs. After all, who doesn’t love his smile?
8. Girl vs Monster
This is a Disney classic starring Olivia Holt as a teenager who is unaware of her destiny to become a monster hunter. Monsters are accidentally released back into this world and they hunt her down to prevent her from fulfilling her destiny. Honestly, it’s not that great of a movie, the jokes don’t land, the CGI is funny, and the acting is mediocre at best. However, it’s a nice nostalgic throwback.
7. Monster House
Speaking of nostalgic throwbacks; Monster House! Now, if you didn’t watch this as a kid and then pick a house in your neighborhood that you thought was the monster house, you were missing out! It’s exactly what it sounds like, when three kids find out the creepy house in their neighborhood is actually alive, no one believes them and they must fight it on their own. This is an animated kids movie but it has a well-thought-out ending with a good lesson behind it.
6. Halloweentown
This one is also on here for a throwback. Marnie and her children go to their grandma’s house in Halloweentown and discover they come from a long line of witches. This town is meant for supernatural beings to live a normal life but when their town is threatened by evil, they must protect their new home. It’s a very cute movie to watch on a spooky self-care night.
5. Trick’r Treat
Trick’r Treat is an overlooked movie that contains five short stories about a principal with a secret life, a virgin searching for her first time, a prank gone wrong, a Scrooge-like woman who hates Halloween, and demonic trick-or-treaters. It’s a fun movie that captures the Halloween spirit by covering all the bases.
4. Twitches
90’s stars, Tia and Tamara Mowry, play the main roles of twins on their 21st birthday who must use their powers to save their home. This movie is a classic Halloween movie to watch on a girl’s or guy’s night. Just imagine a bowl of freshly popped popcorn, a face mask on, and Twitches playing in the background.
3. Nightmare Before Christmas
This is a stop-motion movie by none other than himself, the man who brought us Coraline, Henry Salick. It’s a perfect movie for this time of the season. A perfect blend of Halloween and Christmas, it follows Jack Skellington, the beloved pumpkin king, who discovers Christmastown and becomes jealous of its merry atmosphere.
2. Scary movie
This is a classic spin that takes popular scary movies and turns them into comedic parodies. This is a series but it’s always best to start with the first. Some inspiration you may recognize came from Scream, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, The Blair Witch Project, and more. It’s a good laugh to have with your friends and a good break that stays on the theme between horror films!
1. Scream franchise
Scream is a quickly-recognized series that takes place in a small town called Woodsboro. My first recommendation is to watch all six movies in the series. My friend and I had a marathon over the month of October and between jumping, laughing, or dying over Billy Loomis and Stu Macher (I mean have you seen the Ghostface mask!?), it was the best time! Now, if you don’t have the time nor the patience to watch six movies, I would recomend watching Scream 1, Scream 3, Scream 5, and Scream 6 (because frankly, 2 and 4 were quite repetitive in my opinion). Now, if you really don’t have time, just watch the first and last one. The first is a classic and the start of the franchise with great acting, great twists, great writing, and iconic fourth-wall breaking. And the most recent one, Scream 6, is mostly a new cast but the writers did an amazing job of switching it up. This brand new Ghostface is much less predictable and you never know what’s going to happen next. I was literally on the edge of my seat four times!
Honoroble Mentions: Finally, some honorable mentions are Halloween, The Blair Witch Project, The Witches of Eastwick, and Coraline!
