Friday, April 18, 2025 Beloit College senior India David is officially launching her Substack Closet Confessions, where she will post about fashion, her outfits, and her upcycling projects each week.

Substack is a subscription platform that allows artists of all sorts, writers, videomakers, musicians, and more to post their content publicly for free or a subscription fee.

“I had a substack I just wasn’t writing anything with it” says India David’25 when asked what inspired her to start posting her writing, “It was taking the Mackey Chair class with Janisse Ray and her encouraging me really formed the idea that I can do this with my closet and sewing and putting on outfits I love.”

The Lois and Willard Mackey Chair in Creative Writing allows Beloit College to bring an author to campus to teach a creative writing class for part of a semester. This year, Janisse Ray, a writer and naturalist, came and taught the first part of the spring semester.

Ray’s class focused on creative nonfiction writing and included discussions about how to get works published. Ray has several published books and a Substack of her own, and she encouraged the writers in the class to create ones themselves.

“Those discussions in class gave me a direction to pursue, and the liberal arts student in me is taking advantage of any opportunity I can,” says David.

David is typically a writer in the fantasy genre of fiction, and she is still actively pursuing that while writing her weekly posts. David sees the posts not as articles but “ as creative nonfiction with a focus in fashion.”
