Today I woke up afraid
Not because the familiar and comfortable ends
Or the assortment of goodbyes and goodlucks taste bittersweet
Today I woke up afraid
Because the sun risen in the East
And the mourning doves sang to the wind
Because the sky still radiated blue
And the red cardinals chattered in concession
This morning was like yesterday
And every day before yesterday
Today resembled the past yet
Today I woke up in the present yet
Today marked the future: My future
Today I woke up afraid
Because time continued it’s infinite call
And the world seemed indifferent to the date
Because I was transforming into myself
And the growing-up pains now pink scars
Today was like yesterday yet
Today I graduate and
Today I will become life itself
I’ll celebrate not my accomplishments but my possibilities
I’ll ascend beyond the sun and sing against the wind
Today I woke up with a promise
The promise of life
