Only a couple of weeks after students have flocked back to campus, the Logan Museum is about to wrap up one of its student-made exhibits- “New Insights from the Collection”, which was installed and open to the public from March 11 of last year. This exhibit, focusing on traditional craft pieces donated from the John Jackson Collection to Beloit College in 2024, displays several different pieces researched and presented by Beloit students.
“Students contribute to the process of cataloguing collections by conducting research, updating the database, applying catalogue numbers to objects, and building custom housing for storage,” a placard at the exhibition states. The exhibit displays pieces from varying cultures, including carved gourds from Peru, a number of Southeast Asian tube skirts, and a Palestinian thobe, among others. Alongside each are item labels and descriptions of the research done to gain further insight into their origins as well as their original contexts. In correspondence with Enigma Calvaria ‘26, a student who worked on the exhibit, they said that they were “surprised and delighted to see the 3 African ceremonial figures…that I’d been researching for my job.” They added, “Obviously with the variety of objects we see many different stories.”
“New Insights from the Collection” will be open to the public through September 8, 2025.
