Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for plotting a military coup. The Supreme Federal Court convicted him on five charges, including leading a criminal organization and attempting to disrupt Brazil’s democratic order. Four of the five justices ruled in favor of conviction, while one justice dissented. Bolsonaro was accused of trying to overturn his 2022 electoral defeat by mobilizing supporters and planning to detain political opponents.
Bolsonaro was under house arrest at the time of sentencing and denies wrongdoing. Bolsonaro’s legal team announced plans to appeal. The court also convicted seven co-conspirators including high ranking military officials linked to the plot. This verdict marks the first time a former Brazilian president has been sentenced for an attempted coup. Bolsonaro remains banned from running in elections until 2033.
