On Wednesday, Sept. 24, students from countries around the globe came together at the Powerhouse for the Study Abroad Fair. People from various schools ignited the flame of excitement for those interested in studying abroad, enlightening them on the various opportunities they can take advantage of while being abroad.
Now you may be thinking, why study abroad? Wouldn’t it just be another big bill on top of our already crazy tuition? Well, for starters, you can finally get yourself out of this boring ass school and go out into a world where going to Walmart isn’t the highlight of your day. You could go to Sydney and go to a concert on a Friday night after classes, or you could go to The U.K. and visit the big ass castle they used for that one wizard movie series. ANYWHERE BUT HERE. If money is the main factor holding you back from going out and letting your mind expand from the joy of viewing the outside world instead of this fuckin snow globe of a campus, then I’m sure the financial office could help you out with that. Go talk to them, they are lonely.
Additionally, you should really learn a new language and experience the diverse cultures of other countries. English isn’t the only language out there, and you can greatly benefit from being bilingual; new relationships and job opportunities and all that jazz.
Now, despite my ranting, Beloit isn’t all that bad. In the words of Kazuma Miyashita’27, a Junior coming from Kansai Gaidai in Japan, “Beloit College is a very small college, so it is a good environment to make friends and study… (but) the food in the cafeteria is honestly very much not good compared to Japan, so I already miss Japanese food.” Oh, don’t even get me STARTED on commons food, how can you go from yummy, delicious Mexican food to SOME FUCKIN JACKFRUIT. The bottom line is, if you’re thinking of studying abroad…DO IT. BREAK THE SNOWGLOBE. Your soul will thank you.
