Saturday, Nov. 1, Beloit College Women’s Ice Hockey Team had their home opener in their inaugural season against Marian University at Woodman’s Sports & Convention Center in an unfortunate 0-4 loss.
Before the game, Beloit College hosted a gathering, and also handed out free shirts for the first 200 fans. Media Day pictures of the women’s team were also displayed around the lobby, and Beloit College students and faculty alike gathered to take advantage of this exciting new team.
Stepping onto the ice, President Eric Boynton had a ceremonial puck drop before the game began, and he was one of many administrators who could be seen at the event.
The Bucs started strong, with both teams battling for the first goal, but Marian scored first, over halfway through the first period. Although they conceded a goal, the Bucs dominated the first period in shots, 5-3, and the team worked on connecting passes up the field.
In the second period, defense became a crucial part of this game as goalkeeper Madison Bliss’28 made 11 saves in this period alone, and she became a crucial player for keeping her team in the game. Beloit managed three shots on net, but were unable to convert.
Back on the ice, Marian had a strong push for the goal, and were able to find the back of the net in the sixth minute. Buccaneer defense was struggling and were pushed to their limits by the end of the third, conceding two more goals in the last four minutes.
Bliss had an impressive 18 saves for the Buccaneers, and Rachel Fussy and Kennedy Gruhlke dominated faceover wins, with a combined 77.7% win rate.
The women play next on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at Lawrence University, and the men’s ice hockey home opener is Wednesday, Nov 12 at 7:30 p.m. in Janesville. The women are at home next on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Show up and support your fellow Buccaneers!
