As the Sports editor of a newspaper, I often find myself thinking about what my favorite sports are. There’s so many of them, and I go in and out of phases where I obsess over a different sport every week. In the spirit of panic writing, I was prompted to follow suit of the legendary Elisa Turner’27 sports listicle of the same name, so I figured I would give my take on what sports are the best.
5. Baseball. When the season starts, baseball is great. When the playoffs happen, baseball is great. I love the way that the players hit bombs at balls at such high speeds, which I could definitely not do. The only drawback to this sport is that there’s a lot waiting and it has the potential to be very boring. Watching baseball on TV and watching it in person are two very different things, and I love watching baseball in person.
4. Tennis. There’s just something about watching people run back and forth while loudly yelling or grunting cannot be topped. The traditions of tournaments like Wimbledon have a long standing history, and there are always very entertaining tennis matches. Overall, it’s a great sport, even though the people who play it can be total divas sometimes.
3. Hockey. I started watching hockey in my freshman year of college, and I fell in love with it. It’s fast-paced, action packed, and requires a lot of skill. I’m aware that all of the players have been skating since they were two years old, but it’s still very impressive. I also like the fighting aspect. That’s great. But the best thing about hockey is the goaltender equipment. They all look so good, and I love how these guys make goaltending an art form. Very impressive!
2. Soccer. Soccer was my first love, which I started following during the 2022 World Cup. Having watched as much soccer as I have, you’ll find that there are no shortage of ways to shoot a soccer ball into the net, and that there are even more ways to save a soccer ball from going into the net. I love soccer. Even if it’s very hard to play, I will still keep trying.
1. Football. The American kind. I do love football, mainly because I’m surrounded by it all the time. I love the intricacies of every play and how much the quarterback needs to keep track of, all of which happens in a split second. I love the spectacular catches. Some of them look so easy that they make me think that I can play football. Even if the Raiders lose every week, I’ll support them to the day I die.
