Early Sunday morning on Mar. 1, 2026, a gunman caused ruckus outside Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden on West Sixth Street in downtown Austin, Texas, killing two people and injuring 14 others before police fatally shot him.

The attack began around 1:39 – 1:58 a.m. when the suspect, driving an SUV, circled the popular bar multiple times, activated his hazard lights, and fired a pistol from the window at patrons on the patio and in front. He then parked nearby, exited with a rifle, and continued shooting at bystanders along the street until officers confronted and shot him. A pistol and rifle were recovered at the scene. Three people died total, including the shooter. 14 were hospitalized, three critically. Paramedics and police, stationed in the nightlife district, arrived in 57 seconds, treating victims immediately. Austin Mayor Kirk Watson praised the rapid response for saving lives.

The gunman was identified as Ndiaga Diagne, a U.S. citizen born in Senegal, wearing a “Property of Allah” sweatshirt with an Iranian flag undershirt. The FBI is probing terrorism indicators from his vehicle and attire, though motive remains undetermined. No victims have been publicly named.
