10 Music Genres That Exist

  1. Rock

The sound of taking your dad’s side in the divorce, this genre sometimes dips into the realm of metal, but differentiating the two is not important because they’re both good and often complement each other. Women beware: if you can’t name five songs by every band you like on the spot, some guy named Kyle is going to assume you have no real personality, you poser. It is fine to ignore Kyle.

  1. Metal

Yes, metal is amazing, but nobody is learning the names of 500 subgenres based on how much of the lyrics are audible. The popular bands are popular for good reason, and the more obscure ones are great when you’ve had time to familiarize yourself with the genre. A Keith is like a Kyle but for metal.

  1. Pop

People may call it basic, but pop is probably the most iconic genre on this list. The early to mid 2000s were probably the most notable era for both pop and hip-hop, as both catchy genres would work together to create generational hits and several white girl party music staples.

  1. Musical theater

Live theater is one of the most difficult musical performance types to pull off, requiring performers to tell a story through song and stage presence all while powering through several hours of dancing and quick changes. With all of that in mind, you still shouldn’t be caught dead listening to musicals in public.

  1. Country

If you can get past all the songs about trucks, girls, and beer, there are actually plenty of good and genuinely heartfelt country songs out there. Hearing about a man’s journey of starting a family or a woman slashing her cheating husband’s tires is enough to bring a tear to your eye.

  1. Jazz

Be honest, is Frank Sinatra the first musician that comes to mind when you think of jazz (or ‘50s music in general)? He was an amazing vocalist, but is often used as a device to overlook the amazing Black musicians of the era like Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole, who are still two of the most renowned jazz musicians to this day.

  1. Mariachi

These bands are often used as a comedy bit, but the music style is actually a traditional Mexican ensemble which can be blended with other styles to create lively parties or rich storytelling. Shoutout to Antonio Aguilar, the most famous man in Tayahua.

  1. Classical

Classical music can be great for when you want to study without distracting lyrics, and the composition is impressive to even the most casual enjoyers. Be careful not to become too pretentious about it, though, or you won’t be invited to any parties.

  1. Electronic

NOT to be confused with AI music, this style is formed through the creation of sound through electronic instruments and software. As with all human-produced music, there is always a chance it won’t be to everyone’s taste, but any art is better than AI art.

  1. Folk

“Folk” is a broad term that can refer to traditional music from nearly anywhere in the world. The replication of any one of these styles creates modern day folk, which is for the cottagecore girlies and the nonbinary people whose wardrobes look like a Shakespeare stageplay.
