On Tuesday, Nov. 7, Beloit College had its 2023 Beloit & Beyond Conference. The conference gave students the freedom to showcase their experiences and what they learned in a multitude of different opportunities, including, but not limited to: study abroad, internships, campus jobs, research projects, and community engagement.

The times and locations of the presentations were sorted by the topic at hand, usually in groups of three. Additionally, each group was moderated by a member of the Beloit College staff, depending on which department was most relevant.

There were a vast amount of different topics being presented, from My Impact on the Beloit International Film Festival by Nicolas Doret‘24 to Navigating Rome and Its Toilets by Emeline Russell’25, the Beloit & Beyond Conference was sure to cover something interesting for anyone and everyone.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the conference, it’s impossible to attend them all, but the ones I have been able to attend I do not regret for a second. You could not go wrong seeing the hard work of any student presenting.

Two separate presentations, given by Louise Claussen’24 and Martu Kollie’24, respectively, addressed their unique experiences at the Public Policy and International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute. The seven-week program involves sending junior students to different schools in hopes of increasing diversity in public policy and international affairs in graduate schools. Though the two students went through the same program, their experiences at each school they attended made for unique presentations.

There were multiple presentations about the Coe College Wilderness Field Station program, to which Beloit students are encouraged to apply. One student, Benjamin O’Connor’26, had a presentation regarding their research during the program in addition to their journey of self-transformation, both physically and mentally. Through their connections with both their peers and the wilderness, the Coe College Wilderness Field Station proved to be a valuable program.

Rebeca Galindo’25 and Kitana Gulotta’25 had a shared presentation: Summer Internship Experience at the Wisconsin State Capitol. The internship lasted three months and was within the office of Beloit Alum, Senator Mark Spreitzer’09. The presenters revealed how working within the state government’s office gave them insight into changing and improving communities within the 15th Senate District.

If you’re interested in viewing the full list of topics and presentations that you might have missed or just want a quick reminder of those that you have attended, the program is available for viewing on the Beloit College website, under Beloit & Beyond Conference.
