The Newly Enforced Beloit College Substance-use Policy

Following the return of students from their Winter Break, rumors began to circulate about a “change” in Beloit College’s substance-use policy. Many students claimed that this change made alcohol and Marajuana illegal to consume on campus and that this had never been the case before.

However, after further investigation, it seems that these rumors are not quite accurate. Residential Assistants around campus have already spoken with many of their residents and clarified the current substance-use policy at Beloit College. The current rules boil down to the following:

• It is against college policy for anyone under the age of 21 to consume alcohol

Should it be discovered that someone under 21 years of age has consumed alcohol, all involved—be they under or over the permitted drinking age—will face penalties

• If at or above 21 years of age, alcohol is permitted to be drunk only in private areas—that is, not in lounges or public walkways
• Marijuana—including THC-8, THC-9, and THCA products—is not permitted on campus at any age, due to marijuana remaining illegal in Wisconsin

To better understand these rules and where the rumors were coming from, I reached out to Randi Mogul, the current head of Beloit College’s Residential Life, on behalf of the Round Table. During the meeting, Mogul clarified that these rules have always been in place and that no changes or alterations have been made to the policy. 

While the policy may not always have been enforced, that does not change the fact that the policy has always been active. Mogul encourages students to familiarize themselves with the Beloit College Student Handbook, so that they may be fully aware of all Beloit College policies. 

Mogul went on to state that any breaches of the policy would be enforced via Beloit’s Campus Security, not via external law enforcement.
