If you’ve been looking around at campus events for the past few weeks, you’ve probably heard of this new club called “Omega-Zeta.” These guys have taken the student event scene by storm, but there are still a lot of unanswered questions surrounding them. Who are they? Are they a club or a frat? Are they associated with the actual Omega-Zeta organization? Are they really getting a designated floor next semester? Fear not, because we took the time to interview the big shots at OZ at their C-Haus opener on Friday to answer all of our burning questions.
Fortunately for us, all of the important members were standing on the stage at C-Haus by themselves at the opener, which made interviews very easy.
The first member that we interviewed was none other than president Donaldo Robelo’27. Our first real question was if Omega-Zeta was a knock-off Sig. Donaldo said that Sig and OZ are separate. “We’re our own thing,” he said, “we’re helping young men find their true potential.” He also said that Beloit’s OZ is a local fraternity, and isn’t affiliated with the actual OZ fraternity organization. We don’t know if they have any plans to become affiliated with the OZ organization. Donaldo has a few goals for his new brotherhood. Currently, OZ is reportedly getting the second floor in Blaisdell next semester, but Donaldo is trying to get a designated house in 2-3 years (but he’s aiming for 2). He also wants OZ to put on more fundraising and events, and have more people rush in the fall.
We also talked to the frat philanthropist, Michael Snow’27. Admittedly, the title of “philanthropist” was a little strange, but once we found out that it was just the person responsible for organizing fundraisers and other events. When asked about the possibility of a frat sweetheart, Snow said that they were looking into the possibility of having them. We also asked other members about the qualities they were looking for in a sweetheart, and the common themes were hardworking, genuine, funny, quick-witted, and goal-oriented. So ladies, if you fit that description, hit Omega Zeta up!
Many members spoke very highly of OZ and what it meant to them. When asked about what OZ meant to him, Jaxon Lee’27 said “Omega-Zeta is the most welcoming frat on campus.” The oldest member of OZ, Daniel Mayhew’24, was very excited about joining and was excited about its future. “We want to have events so big that we have to use the football field to fill them all. We want to flood frat row. We want people who never leave their rooms to come to our parties and have a good time. That’s what we’re all about”. All of the members unanimously agreed that the organization’s goal was to “bring the life back to student life”, and as cheesy as it sounds it’s a genuine statement from these guys.
While 97% of OZ members are football players, many of the members are advocating to break the narrative that frats are all sports-related, and are even encouraging more non-athletes to rush in the fall. One of these non-athletes is Adrian Santiago’27, who serves as OZ’s media chair. AD said that he was approached with the position after a few friends asked him to join the frat, and he says that he wants to show people what OZ is all about through his photography and media skills.
Currently, OZ isn’t accepting any new members, so you’ll have to wait to rush until the fall. And remember, OZ is bringing life back into student life…
