A few weeks ago, the Round Table covered the mysterious @beloitbucsbarstool Instagram account. We came up with some theories about who the person running the account was and concluded that it was a fun, silly account, and that was that. Until now.
Lydia Williams’26 read the previous article about this account and had some things to say about the interactions that they had with it. So I set up an interview with Williams to get the full scoop, expecting new theories or maybe even proof of the real identity of this account. The information I got was very different.
Williams recalls that the account posted a meme that read “Me in class avoiding eye-contact w/ everyone after my actions at the highlighter party.” Williams, who is very vocal about boycotting Sigma Chi (the organization that hosted the highlighter party), subsequently commented “Nothing you did during the party could be worse than attending in the first place.”
“I fully expected [the account] to delete [my comment], which they did,” Williams said. “They blocked me too. I thought it was a little much, but I wasn’t shocked.”
Williams then told me that the account blocked all of their alternative accounts and accounts that Williams was associated with. OEC, TEAA, Williams’ radio show account, @beloitcollege.fits, and a cosplay account that Williams hasn’t posted on since high school. Understandably, Williams was creeped out by this. “That’s… freaky. I’m like, how much time did you spend searching for all of this? Why was it that big of a deal in the first place? A, this is a very strong reaction and it doesn’t warrant that, and B, you’ve clearly had to have done lots of research to get to all of those.”
This very strong reaction leads Williams to believe that the person behind @beloitbucsbarstool is an athlete who is associated with Sigma Chi.
I asked Williams if they thought this reaction would have happened to anyone, or if it came about because they had been so vocal about not supporting Sigma Chi in the past. Before the highlighter party, many people had reposted an Instagram story from Williams saying that people shouldn’t attend the party. I asked them if they thought it would have been different if someone less vocal, like me for example, had commented on the post.
They responded “I think that if you had said it, they probably would’ve deleted the comment and blocked you. Definitely would not have done all that. I’ve got a repertoire with Sigma Chi, and that’s another strong indicator that this account is run by someone in Sig. Or it could’ve been someone who was egged on by Sig, like, ‘Oh, you gotta block them! They’re out to get us!’”
To me, it seems that something that wasn’t that deep really struck a nerve with the people over at @beloitbucsbarstool. With the identity of this account still remaining a mystery, one thing is for certain: they seem to not take kindly to criticism. Which begs the question: will they block me for writing this?
