New York Times Tech Guild Strikes!

On Monday, November 4, the New York Times Tech Guild walked off the job after the New York Times and the guild’s union failed to reach an agreement. The tech guild has been in negotiations with the Times since 2022. The union members authorized this strike in September, giving the Times plenty of notice. At the time of this vote, 622 members were participating in the union. The strike came just in time for the election, which brings high traffic to the website and to the Time’s election needle which is managed by the guild. From what The Round Table was able to find, the website did not have any major issues on election night.

The union has been campaigning for remote work, pay equity, paid leave and protections from being fired without reason or due process. There have also been reports of hostility and interrogation about strike plans from managers. Although the Times has repeatedly denied this. The tech guild draws support from the journalists union and the Wirecutter union, who do consumer product testing. The journalists have protections against firing without reason or due process.

The Guild will be picketing indefinitely outside of the Times Square office from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily. They have asked for support from readers in the form of a digital picket line. They request that readers should not access the Times games, including the popular Wordle, or the Times cooking app.
