On Sept. 10, 2025, Poland shot down at least a dozen Russian Shahed-style drones that violated its airspace during a large-scale drone attack on Ukraine. This was the first time a NATO member country engaged hostile drones in its own airspace amid the ongoing Ukraine conflict. NATO scrambled fighter jets from Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands to assist Poland in intercepting the drones.

Commercial flights were temporarily halted in Warsaw due to concerns over airspace security. Poland invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty, prompting urgent consultations among member states about collective security. The Polish government emphasized that the drone incursions posed a serious threat to national and regional security. Russia denied any intended violation of Polish airspace, attributing the incidents to navigation errors. No casualties were reported from the drone strikes.
