The Chicago Bears secured their first victory this season against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Sept. 21, sparking hope in the hearts of fans. The teams met on a beautiful day in Soldier Field. Two weeks earlier on Monday night, the Bears suffered a heartbreaking defeat on their home turf against the Minnesota Vikings. Now, they return to face off against their NFC East opponents.
The Bears have had what some may call an “unfortunate” history as of late. Last week, they incurred a brutal loss against the Detroit Lions, losing 21-52. Much like the first game this season, the Bears played well up until the fourth quarter, when they seemed to lose their spirit. Quarterback Caleb Williams threw several interceptions at critical moments, and was often unable to find an open man. The defense seemed to lose their hustle as the odds stacked up against them. This followed the 24-25 season, where the Bears won their first four games, only to lose the next nine. The initial impression, based on the results of the last two games and the previous season, was not good. But like all good Bears fans, we sat ourselves down for the next one. And despite their record, they managed to score a victory against Dallas.
Williams made several successful plays on Sunday, including a nail-biting 66-yard flea flicker pass to Luther Burden III, which resulted in a touchdown. They also managed to secure several rushing yards, as well as several successful kicks. Overall, they looked good. As a Bears fan, it’s difficult to get one’s hopes up. The team played well, but they could’ve played better. A 31-14 defeat is no close game by any means, and both the offense and defense deserve commendation for their effort. Is it playoff material? Most likely not. Unfortunately, Bears fans may still have a few years before we can party with the big boys. As all football fans know, the Cowboys aren’t exactly the toughest opponents. We will have to see what the Bears can accomplish this Sunday.
