On Jan. 29, Beloit Urban Gardens had its first meeting since 2023. BUG, as it is called, is a campus club dedicated to the growth and maintenance of the various gardens here on campus. For those of us with a green thumb, this club offers a particularly exciting opportunity. BUG works with the Outdoor Environmental Club (OEC) to organize events and planting locations, germinate seeds, and build up the Beloit community. They are committed to herbal research and environmental sustainability.
BUG is also a creative environment to meet and work with new people. BUG encourages students from all disciplines to participate, as many fields of study are necessary. From engineering to philosophy, all disciplines have the potential to play an important role. BUG follows a code of honor similar to that of pirates. Every member on board has an important role to play, such as the quartermaster, who keeps inventory of seeds and supplies, or the treasurer, who controls funds. Beloit student Kaden Sako’29 is the current captain of the “ship,” but despite his title, Sako stresses the importance of equality and tolerance of everyone’s opinions and ideas. An election will be held on Sunday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. to appoint roles to all the members.
BUG also works with Bon Appetit, and this year they are hoping to supply vegetables and hot sauces to the campus. This is an interesting and delicious opportunity which we are all looking forward to. BUG works to embrace humanity’s connection with nature and create an environment built on green energy and forward thinking. As BUG captain Kaden Sako said, “The world is there to be changed for those who want to change it.”
