Learning About Our Rights at the Library

On Thursday, Feb. 26 the library hosted a “Know Your Rights” event. Students were presented with information and events by fellow students, faculty and staff. 

Archivist Diane Ray presented on local redlining, Assistant Professor of Political Science Gregory Koutnik presented on weird proposed amendments in U.S. history, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Katherine Harris presented on voting methods, and students Lylah Murrah’27 & Lucy Monning’26 presented on gerrymandering. 

All the presenters had an event related to their topics that students could participate in. For example, Prof. Koutnik had students compete in trying to find the weird proposed amendments to the U.S. constitution. Among the proposed amendments was abolition of polygamy, and guaranteeing the right of women to be topless in public. 

Along with the fun, there was a table filled with information relating to topics such as voting, the constitution and local services in Beloit dedicated to housing and family services.
