It’s getting colder, windier, and depending on who you ask, more depressing. That’s right: it’s time for fall. Wisconsin’s inevitable descent into the cold, grueling winter has started. Before we know it, snow and ice will coat the ground. So let’s take advantage of this fall before it becomes unbearably cold. Maybe your mind is still in summer, or in school. Well, get your heads out of those books and turn on the TV! Here are five of my favorite movies and shows to watch during this season.
- Hocus Pocus
If we’re talking classics, we can’t miss this one. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parkers, and Kathy Najimy play the Sanderson sisters. The trio has inspired Halloween costumes we still see to this day. Don’t forget Thackery Binx, the boy who was turned into a talking cat, and whose role stole the audience’s heart. This movie holds the test of time and continues to be on my fall movie rotation.
- Nightmare Before Christmas
If I’m going to be honest for the sake of journalistic integrity, I watch this movie year. I can’t help it; I love everything about it — the setting, the songs, the characters, and the plot. In this children’s movie from the twisted mind of Tim Burton, Jack Skellington, the man that people still thirst over, took the world by storm. Nothing appealed to the mentally ill, such as myself, like a skeleton with feelings.
- Hereditary
This is for all the horror fans in the crowd. This is a pretty popular and well established horror movie, one that I avoided watching for a while. This movie made me scared to be alone for a few days after, which hasn’t happened to me since reaching the age of fifteen. Despite being horrified, a lot of things about this movie stuck with me. The filming of the movie itself could be a whole Op-Ed article, and a long one at that. I was pulled into this movie; as much as I wanted to look away, I couldn’t.
- The Vampire Diaries
It’s been a while since I’ve done a re-run of this show, and something in the air is telling me it’s time again. This show gives you almost everything, attractive vampires, funny side characters, and a main character you love to hate. You can’t help but fall in love with one of the Salvator brothers, or an Original if you like them crazy and centuries old. Mystic Falls, the town it’s set in, sounds like it’s set permanently in fall. Sure, the highschoolers are played by thirty-year-olds who look as old as they are, but if you can get past that, and some of the cheesy dialogue, the show is a goldmine.
- MutANT Farm Episodes
If you grew up in the 2010s, you’ve had to have watched at least one of these episodes. I rewatch these every single year and they’re just as good as the first time I watched them. Even without China Ann McCalin’s “Calling all the Monsters,” the show, and these episodes in particular, would be a smashing hit. My favorite character is probably Gibson, especially as a mummy. The touch of him being incredibly stupid and in charge of the Advanced Natural Talent program is so funny to me.
