Lacrosse is a thriving sport at Beloit College. But a lot can change in a year. With the season already underway, the Round Table took the time to talk to the head coach of the men’s lacrosse team and a player on the women’s team.
The women’s team had a productive last season, making the conference finals. Attacker Cece Johnson’27 thinks that while things have changed since last season, the goals of the women’s lacrosse team remain the same. “Last season, we had an amazing run,” she says. “Our team came together and did the unexpected, making it all the way to the championship conference game.” Cece also admitted that while the women’s team has lost some key players, they’re “adapting and working hard training [the] new players to fill the positions we need them in.” In terms of goals for the upcoming season, the women’s team is staying focused, and are shooting to return to the conference finals, with Cece adding that their “goals are to do the same, if not better this season.”
On the men’s side of things, head coach Kevin Lerg remains optimistic despite ending last season with a 3-16 record. Lerg believes last season was “another season of improvement for [the Men’s Lacrosse team,]” stressing how last year’s team was “the best team we’ve had” during the coach’s four years at Beloit. As a program, they have “taken an overarching goal of just continuing to get better each year.” Despite the optimism, Lerg does admit that “there were certainly ups and downs throughout the season.” Honesty, between coaching staff and players, surrounding the level of competition in the league is important to head Coach Lerg, who says that “we play in a good league and play against schools with good programs.” In addition to some tough matchups, Coach Lerg says that “From a roster perspective, there are some depth challenges.” Lacrosse is a physically demanding sport so “keeping the guys healthy is also a priority.”
Both teams seem to remain optimistic, and with women’s lacrosse beating UW-Stevens Point 17-5, Beloit lacrosse is looking to have an exciting season.
