Beloit Women’s lacrosse started their season with a 17-5 win over UW-Stevens Point. Maya DeGeorge opened the scoring immediately off the draw, and followed up with another two shortly after. With just over eight minutes left in the first quarter, Stevens Point scored their first goal of the game, bringing the score to 3-1. DeGeorge scored two more times in the first quarter, before Cassidy Felix pushed to the buzzer with a goal in the last thirty seconds.
The second quarter began with a goal from Daisy Kleinhoffer, then another goal from Felix and DeGeorge. In the middle of the second, Cecilia Johnson scored the first goal of her career off of Johanna McNair’s pass. McNair was marked throughout the entire game, but was able to finally score at the end of the first half. On the defensive end, Elzbieta Patapaite, Hailey McNamee, Alexxa Schubert, and Laurel Zolper were able to keep Stevens Points to only 8 shots and three goals in the first half. The teams left the field for halftime at 11-3, and when the second half started there was high energy across the field.
Scoring slowed down in the second half, yet Johnson scored again, where she managed to lose her defender off a cut for Beloit’s second goal in the third. DeGeorge scored two goals in the third, along with two more goals from Stevens Point. McNair continued to beat her defender, scoring two more goals in the second half. Coach Counes played everyone who dressed for the game, allowing fresh legs and new players to gain experience on the field. Once again, Patapaite, McNamee, and Schubert were crucial in preventing shots, with only three in the second half.
Cassidy Felix once again had the last score before the horn, ending the game at an amazing 17-5 win.
Beloit dominated the field in ground balls and controlling the draw, and also had five players on the scoresheet. DeGeorge finished with 8 goals, McNair and Felix with three, Johnson with two and Kleinhoffer with one. The team plays away against UW Stout on Wednesday, then they are back at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Hamline University.
