If there’s anything you should know about college students, it’s this: they will ignore emails for three weeks but will absolutely wait in line for a vintage-style photo booth.
On Wednesday, April 22, Beloit held its annual Spring Day, organized by PBoard and ResLife. The event had free pizza, games, music, countless charity events by different interest groups, and Spring Day T-shirts spread across campus throughout the afternoon. Still, among all the activities, one of the most consistently crowded spots was the new vintage photo booth, with 3,484 photos taken throughout the day.
The popularity of the photo booth also reflected something about the Spring Day itself. Rather than just being a break from classes, the event gave students a reason to stay outside and spend time together before classes end and finals week begins. Friends lingered on lawns long after getting food or playing in the inflatables, creating an atmosphere that felt noticeably different from the usual rush between classes.
While free pizza will always attract college students, on this particular day, the photo booth was a success for a different reason: it gave people something personal to take with them. Long after Spring Day ends, photo strips will remain taped to mirrors, tucked in wallets, and hanging on bulletin boards across campus.
