September 25, 7:30 p.m. and two intramural volleyball teams are staring into each other’s eyes. Team One (Nick Lanpheer ’25, Colin Frank’26, Devin Brog’25, Anjeli Calderon’25, and Manny Flores’25) started on the east side of the volleyball courts, playing alongside the basketball team, a mealy mesh separating them. Team Two (Jeremy Mueller’27, Tristan Caldevon’28, Austin Dutter’27, Kitana Gulotta’25, Dariya Kylyshpay’27, Cooper Rathmann’28, and Valeria Samaniego’28 (came late)), seemed confident that they would crush those fools. Valeria, a sweet girl, showed up as the last point was being played, and I had the displeasure of telling her what had occurred in her absence.
Team Two, in both rounds, started strong. Their teamwork was impressive, and their hits were gentle and precise. A mesmerizing watch, it ultimately backfired later in each of their games as team one seemed to get progressively more passionate about winning as the rallying went on. At times Manny Flores would hit the ball so hard that it would fly erratically through the air and end up out of bounds. Nick Lanpheer agreed that “The amazing guy sometimes doesn’t know his own power”.
Team One ultimately ended up chewing Team Two out, winning their last game almost 10 points ahead. Team One was rumored to be making out with each other behind the sports center after their big win. Beloit College is on the up and up, and it is wonderful to see how intramural volleyball can bring people together.
